Cumberland Nature Reserve
The hike (follow the gorge sign boards) was absolutely breathtaking. The scenery and the path itself was as natural as it gets. I have never experienced such a wild and challenging hike as i did at Cumberland

Cumberland Nature Reserve
Very pleasant destination for a day out to escape the buzz of city life. Clean ablutions and good braai facilities. The R30 entrance fee is well justified and I would definitely recommend this reserve to anyone who wants to relax for a couple of hours over the weekend. There are also overnight campsites.

Cumberland is a superb destination for hiking, birding and wildlife photography. A very well managed reserve on the uMngeni River, with many giraffe, kudu, zebra, blesbok, impala and warthog. Birding is excellent with many specials to be seen. The landscape is dramatic; a deep gorge with red cliffs that fall to the river valley and the iconic paper-bark acacia trees march across the savanna horizons.

Best camping spot. Close to Pietermaritzburg. Good dirt road. Amenities clean and well appointed. No electricity. Hot showers. Stunning scenery and great birding. Lovely walks. Saw giraffe, impala, njala, zebra, blesbok. One group only to a campsite. What a joy. We stayed at Rietspruit but would love to come back and try the others as well. Owners hands-on and very accommodating and friendly.

Wow wow wowwww. What a stunning private Nature Reserve nestled right on our doorstep near Pmb. The accommodation was all we needed and very comfortable. The Horseshoe self catering cottage was surrounded by the most beautiful scenery and wildlife. Very comfortable bedding and my family loved the open plan cottage. Grounds around the whole reserve whether at picnic spots or cottages or camping were perfectly kept and clean. The animals and birdlife is just outstanding. Lovely short and medium walk/ hikes were fun with stunning views of the gorge etc. How nice our early morning alarm clocks were, a group of 5 Fish Eagles moaning at each other early every morning. This has been a top experience for our whole family. And the personal night walks hosted by private guide John, were a treasure trove of information none of us has ever experienced. Candice you are a star at running and keeping it all going, well done indeed. We hope to be back. We loved it so much. Well worth anybody's time please give it a go. Definitely highly recommended.

Incredible visit. Immaculately maintained. Saw big herds if Impala, Blesbok, Zebra, grazing at the picnic site. Did the Krantz hike incredible views, and a magic moment when we were eye to eye with eagle moving through the river gorge. We also bumped into the resident journey of Giraffe. Wonderful place will be back to do the hikes along the river.
