This is the best restaurant I have ever been to in South Africa. We had the tasting meal and literally every single dish was a 10/10. The flavours came together so perfectly. As a pregnant woman they had vegetarian alternatives for some of the food I cannot eat. The vegetarian alternatives were so yummy it did not feel like substitute dishes. The staff were well coordinated and at no point did we feel neglected. The team worked well together like a well oiled machine and every single waiter had extensive knowledge about the dishes. The ambience is very very pretty. Loved the plant wall. Definitely coming back again.

This was the best restaurant/food experience I have had in SA so far. Service, decoration and food was all amazing. My partner and I both had the 5-course tasting menu. Flavours connected so well together and the menu was very well balanced. Every course was delicious and eye catching. Will be back for sure! Highly recommended.

Looking back at this experience - I really regret going and spending my money here. It was awful. Probably the worst dining service I’ve received at any restaurant in South Africa. Really disappointed that this is the review I have to leave, as I was expecting such great things from a sibling restaurant of Test Kitchen - but the overall experience we had at Shortmarket Club was not on par with the price that we paid. All of that being said, the food was incredible - beautiful presentation and the tastes were divine. The drinks were also amazing & the cocktail pairing was wonderful! If my experience was just the food and drinks, minus the service - it would get 5 stars. The decor is beautiful - the space is gorgeous. Something just needs to be done about service - especially as one of the top restaurants in the country. Was brought the wrong dessert & cocktail to match and told it was my fault - never experienced a restaurant mixing up my order and blaming it on me. The manager on duty also didn’t apologize for the mix up, or the poor service. Really shocking. Also had to wait 15+ minutes for a card machine. Really hope this service gets improved. If I’m paying R1300+ for a meal, I don’t expect mistakes, excessively long wait times, poorly trained servers or being blamed when staff make mistakes with orders. The restaurant was fairly empty as well - only about 4 other tables - so I can’t even say it was because they were so busy that it was messed up.

Celebrated Cape Town chef, Luke Dale Roberts, has finally opened a restaurant in Johannesburg. He is famous for the Test Kitchen and the Pot Luck Club. With a welcoming reception outside the restaurant, the enormous Red door conceals the the restaurant interior. The staff was amazing. The service is so speedy. The staff share the tips/service charge. So the service is so smooth and slick. All waiters help all tables. Winning formula. No waving at your waiter necessary. The food was delicious! Delicious! Delicious! I can’t wait to get back there. From the complimentary bread, to the oysters, to the lamb curry, to the fish dish and desserts. The presentation of the oysters was quite an experience. The night was perfect. Every aspect was perfection and so effortless.

An absolutely amazing experience. The food was beyond delicious. Wendy recommended the most heavenly cocktails and Tendai was very attentive. From starters to dessert we were satisfied and will definitely return.

Shortmarket Club was a delightful experience for our anniversary. We had the Oysters which had the perfect amount of hot and tangy. Linefish of the day was incredible. The chocolate fondant was too rich for us to finish but overall a great dining experience and good service.

Food was very very good as seen in the pics I snapped. The fish was amazing and the desserts also really good, got a great chef here. however the service was not great - had to keep asking the waiter where my drink was, asked 3 times for water and the menu itself didn’t provide many options. I don’t think I’d go back

It's difficult to chose between this and the Pot Luck Club in Cape Town. Both restaurants execute every single element of every single dish to absolute perfection. In my opinion they both share 1st position for best restaurant in the country. Flavour, balance and execution. At this level, the best value for money IMO.
