Dessert Studio

Did a pastry course. Had expert teaching with a very relaxed atmosphere. Got to taste our efforts at the end - top notch. Best pasteis de nata I've ever had (not pictured). Great for a group of friends or for professionals wanting to upskill.

What an amazing experience. I was fortunate enough to attend both the Pastry and dessert course on the same weekend. Ryan made what I thought was difficult task into an easy to understand process.

A really wonderful experience! A lovely day out! All instructions are clear, and information is laid out very neatly - with space for notes. Ryan goes above and beyond to make the course enjoyable. He uses quality ingredients, and anticipates anything that could go wrong. I have done the dessert course twice - taking a friend with me the second time for her birthday. It is a lovely setting, and the desserts are absolutely delicious! Overall I would heartily recommend it.

I was contemplating whether or not to post this review, but I feel like I should be honest so people are aware of what the experience is like so they don't spend R800 and have high expectations. The Dessert studio is not a professional cooking studio, its in the back garden of someone's house under a thatch roof lapa with the cooking stations set up on trestle tables with 3 people per station. You don't have your own oven, so you only prepare the desserts, not cook them, or get a feel for when they should be removed from the oven.There was not enough cream for everyone to cook all the recipes properly and we got accused of using too much, the cream was also off, which meant that most of the baked goods were not edible (ie panacotta, creme brulee). You only make enough of each recipe for one portion per person, so there is not much leftover for taking home. Some of the pictures on the website are also not the studios photos of the dishes you'll bake, but rather stock photography (a reverse image search will show this). Some positives include, he was prepared for load shedding with a generator, and there was enough equipment that was washed regularly for you.
