Protea by Marriott Hotel Umfolozi River

I stayed in the hotel for three days, we were there for a conference. The staff members were amazing, Rooms were clean and big, i actually liked them. The food at this place and its operation are just off, for an example certain soft drinks are available for conference package but not for dinner. The food and the menu needs re-visiting in my entire stay i did not enjoy the options and not even the taste. The bar closes early and there are few alcohol options. For a hotel in the area in which is located in, it should definitely improve!

My partner and I had an amazing stay at the Marriott. Rooms were clean and neat. The pool area was absolutely amazing. We had spent alot of time there. Guest services were friendly and accommodating. We will definitely visit again and will recommend a visit. Had a blast. Thank you.

The lady who worked the night shift at the reception on the 16. Dec was very helpful. I think breakfast and waiters service can be improved.

The hotel itself is beautiful, it's quite lush and well structured although isolated in its location. Service was okay, the hotel is quite big so we struggled to find our rooms without any given assistance from the staff. The actual room had a particular odor which was easily solved by the air conditioner, however, the telephone was not functioning, the TV channels were not as listed in the booklet , the shower leaked all over the floor after just using it once and overall it was a mediocre stay.

As you walk into reception you are greeted by very friendly and professional staff. You feel at home immediately.The rooms are modern and spacious and very impressive. A nice hotel to get away from the city and just relax. Also perfect for international tourists.

The room was nice and spacious. The rooms have no fridges and no safes. There is a sign in the bathroom warning guests not to drink the tap water, however the hotel only provide you with one small bottle of water in the room. I would expect at least one liter of water since you can not consume the tap water. The nearest town to buy water is 15km away from the hotel. The access road to the hotel is a gravel road. When you arrive at night you might think you are lost because there are no information boards once you left the highway. The breakfast was not buffet, however you can order everything on the menu. The portions was also big. The cappuccino was made of cappuccino sachets and not freshly made. The cappuccino still had granules in which did not dissolve properly. Otherwise the staff was friendly and helpful and I had a well rested sleep. Although the hotel is located close to the highway, I did not hear any noises from the traffic.

Incredibly unpleasant stay. When we arrived we were checked into someone else's room which is not acceptable and to make matters worse a family member woke up severely itchy and covered in bed bug bites, we addressed both issues with the hotel staff and were told the general manager would contact us but it's now been two weeks since we checked out and we're still waiting for feedback on the matter. Totally unacceptable.

A bit hard to find with poor signage. Twin chalet was a nice big room but toilet didn't flush properly and sewage smell outside. Pool floors need renovating and don't look inviting. No welcome drink on arrival and nobody to assist with bags. Staff are laid back but polite. Dinner buffet was nice with good options but breakfast buffet was not enjoyable. A decent hotel if you are visiting the game reserves/St Lucia. Nothing for children to do and no play area. Will not be back.

The hotel layout is nice for the area it is in. Its modern and fresh. You have to move your own luggage down ramps and stairs to get to the room. It is a far walk if your room is close to the pool. The pool itself is fantastic and generally warm. Pool towels are provided. There is no clean drinking water at the hotel and sometimes the water is discoloured. There are no fridges in the room. There are no Braai facilities and you are forced to eat the hotel food which is extremely over priced and not that tasty. No mosquito nets and no deep cleaning to get rid of the spiders. Bats and rates in the roofs also.
