About the Business

The Western Cape Butterfly sanctuary (WCBS) - We are Open! - Ruiterbosch Lodge | During 2020's hard lockdown with the Corona 19 Pandemic, while watching a wild life program on television; a seed of "What If" was planted within the hearts of the owners of Ruiterbosch Lodge, Louise and Chris Nel. What if they could create a safe haven for all the beautiful, and sometimes endangered species of butterflies here at their lodge. Before long their Son, Hanlo; went to work by contacting the organization; Conservation of Butterflies in South Africa. And as they say, the rest is history! We are very proud to welcome you to this unique piece of art which is our sanctuary; that has proven to be a very interesting place to visit for young and old!

Website shows that they are open, we drove all the way, closed!!!!! Even restaurant, there was no chef, we could not even have coffee. Its just: sorry we are closed and will be for another two weeks. Will not bother to go again.

Did not see many butterflies because of the cold weather. Will definitely go again when weather is warmer

Currently the sanctuary has only been running for a year so they are still starting up. Regardless it is a nice sanctuary that is doing a good job with the butterflies

Not many species now but will have more in March. Its still a joy to see all of them just fly around. A bit hot and humid in the environment but thats how they like it. Will definitely come back

Before you get to the butterflies, you get a very informative 30-minute lecture about these insects with facts that you didn't know from school. For photographers, the time in the butterfly enclosure is just under 30 minutes too short. Unfortunately, you can only stay there if you are accompanied by the guide.

Had a lovely time. Sun came out a bit so the butterflies could warm up. Managed to spot a few different butterflies in the breeding enclosure, you just have to be patient and observant.
