The new Malgas Pont is open to public traffic | Western Cape Government | The Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) has opened its new motorised pont at Malgas. This allows public traffic to cross the Breede River at this point avoiding a time-consuming and expensive 90 km detour by road to reach the other side of the river. Operating hours are 06:00 to 18:00 every day. However, operators may, at their own discretion and without notice,

Lots of fun. A New Years Floatathon had been arranged by locals for holiday-makers like us. The kids all took to the waters in their vessels & had a rave. There were even prizes from locals for cleverest vessels. A little Pont with two or 3 barrels & 2 beds on them win 1st prize. The famous Pont over the River was functioning & carrying cars. Olde Worlde & fun. There is a small hotel, & an Algemeene Handelaars store. . What more could one want ?

Breathtaking!! The two gentlemen walking us / pulling us across with a swing of the wrist, chain grabbing the cable and walking up and down to make the ferry move across the river were pleasant , joking with us and in no time at all we were on the other side.Awesome experience!

Really a lovely experience. My first time on a Pont. Well managed, friendly service, and no nervous feelings of sinking. The Pont is in excellent condition. Well worth the visit.

A view years ago we decided to, instead of driving along on the N2, we decided to take the longer roadgrave via malgas pont. It was such an awesome experience to take the ferry across the river. When we went, they were still using the old ferry. I see that they now use a new yellow ferry.

What an awesome way to cross the breede river!!The staff are super friendly and allowed us to join in on the pontoon pulling experience, on the way back in the heat of the day we got ice cold cool drinks at the breede river trading post, which were happily accepted and enjoyed by the ferry staff.The valley is breath-taking, it's a great adventure of the beaten track and well worth the drive.The ferry is reasonably priced and can be easy boarded by any type of vehicle to a maxium weight of 10 ton.

We arrived at the du pony ferry and got told that they don’t drive to day… a farmer also told us that sometimes drive and sometimes not, it’s more like they drive when they like to. Sick as a lot because you have to drive 2,5h to come on the other side. Maybe the traffic department have to finde a proper operator how really likes to help tourists to explore the are.

Great experience and quick way to cross the Breede river instead of driving around the long way. Everything went smoothly, the ferry was operating from 06h00 to 18h00 daily provided the weather was suitable for the crossing.
