Alice Glockner Nature Reserve

What a disappointment!! Drove all the way there only to find that they are closed due to safety issues. However online advertising as well as the advertising on the Suikerbosrand Nature reserve brochure all say they are open.

The reserve is closed with no information on when it may open again.

Its a nice walk, seems to be a motorcycle track. It's quite big and it's possible to get lost. Regrettably there's no clean water and there is litter. The GPS will not take you to the right entrance. There is no access control. You need to turn into a dirt road just before the official " entrance. Use the maps the find the dirt road. It can be dangerous so make so tell someone about your whereabouts. Good news for dog owners. As it's not in access controlled area

Looks beautiful, but under Level 3 lock-down it's still closed.

Not a nature venue anymore

Although the personnel on site were very helpful, the chalet has obviously not been used for a long time as it is used for full bookings at Marievale and Suikerbos rand nature reserves. We were shifted here. The bath and shower water was red with sediment, the braai outside is connected to the fireplace in the main room so when you braai, smoke fills the room. Fridge kept tripping with the result we had to throw away meat as we went out for the day and it had been off the whole day. We could not use the garage because the remote batteries were flat, the main security gate remote doesnt work so anyone can slide open the gate... Obvious security risk with our vehicle outside. Entrance road not at all conducive for light vehicles. Security lights right around the chalet not working. Also lights in the chalet not effective , we cooked with a torch.

I am very dissatisfied and dissapointed.This is a nature reserve and also a special protected area for one species of butterfly, the only of its kind in the world named the Heidelberg Copper Butterfly.As I read I realise local tourism is and has been non existant since I left Heidelberg in 2012 where we had things in place. Now everything is just as it was before we started getting things in place, and it sound by what I'm reading it got worse? WowThere are caterpillars which crawl all over and if the species die out they are extinct, but for thrill seekers it seems its OK to bring dogs? Into a p r otected nature reserve with scrambler motorcycles? Wow, I'm shocked,Emagine the disruption of the ecology. I'm also shocked the local tourism and heritage, whom ever is suppose to be leason with the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve is not getting any involvement.The place is remote and falls under SANPARKS I geuse if you do get caught eventually with your bike and dogs well the fauna and flora have laws which they enforce so remember to get a good lawyer before you go there again and contravene some of the nature conservation acts, it's only a criminal record with everything being impounded for evidence....
