Helpmekaar Street, Stikland.When my daughter studied Physiotherapy at UCT part of their assignment was to gather statistics by interviewing the people at this Centre.I was the one taking notes as she questioned them. I was able to have a look at the places where they slept, ate and where they had their communal activities.I remember one of the questions was how the person came to be deaf. Some of them were born deaf or became deaf due to illness or an accident.The one lady’s answer that I particularly remember, was that she was having a shower and when she climbed out of the shower, she tripped, fell and knocked her head against the basin and since then she was deaf.This saddened me a great deal. That someone’s life could change so drastically in a blink of an eye.The conditions of the home is not bad at all. Everyone seemed happy and contented under the circumstances.
