We recently relocated to Gauteng and had to rush our yorkie to the vet, as he injured himself whilst playing, the experience from calling in to the attendance of the Dr was amazing, the reception staff are amazing and friendly!

Unfit to run as an emergency service provider. My kitten of 10 weeks old had fallen off the balcony from a height. I rushed my boy to the nearest place on Google maps, in distress. He was gasping and in pain. The receptionist was alert, asked for the appropriate history, and took him in to see the vet promptly. My assumption was that he was being stabilized, that there was some form of resuscitation taking place/ analgesia being given. The vet then comes out and says she wants to do xrays to exclude spinal/hindleg fractures because he has absent deep tendon reflexes of his hindlegs. No other information given.I agree to this, still assuming he is being resuscitated in the interim.A few minutes later, she reports that xrays show no vertebrae/ hindleg fractures (and no other fractures) but that she advises that we take him to Bryanstan vet hospital for further Ix (eg ultrasound) and admission to hospital for observation. The few questions I asked her:-Do u think he needs surgery? She answers no. In her opinion 'there is only some blood on the lungs/ no other injuries.'- IS HE STABLE ENOUGH FOR ME TO TRAVEL WITH HIM? She answers yes. He will be stable for the trip, but I must take him there for admission.- will he be ok? She responds that she doesn't know what the hospital may find, but from from her findings HE IS OK.Again. I assume he had been stabilized and given some form of analgesia. We leave to RUSH to the hospital which is 21mins away, my friend asks again before we leave, is he OK to travel? Yes, was the response.3 minutes into the drive, my sweet boys breathing worsens and his voice gets weaker, 7minutes later, he stops breathing, pupils are dilated, he demised on my lap.I start CPR knowing that the hospital is more than 10mins away, crying, knowing he's gone.We called the hospital in advance letting them know we're en-route.As we arrive, the vet at Bryanstan rushes out to take him and performs CPR.She then comes back and appropriately declares him in a quiet setting with all the information given.I told her about the advice from Midrand Vet, to get him here for admissions 'for observation'. She states (WITHOUT ANY INVESTIGATIONS BEING DONE) that from her clinical exam, his injuries were so extensive- fractured ribs, no open wounds but definitely internal injuries, and the stress of shock on his little body- that even if he got there in time, there's not much they could have done.I appreciated this honesty and I commend Bryanstan Hospitals staff and Dr's. They did not charge for any service except the cremation. As for midrand vet- she missed multiple rib fractures, she missed pelvic fracture, she had no knowledge on the acute management of trauma patients. She provided no form of analgesia or sedation, she did not even speak to me to offer euthanasia- instead, she tells me to rush to the hospital, and that my boy is stable enough to go there, and doesn't give him anything to ease his pain! This was a tragic accident which I will hold myself accountable for, but seeing him suffer and die on my lap was something no one should go through, on advice of a vet! The service from Midrand vet was that of the lowest quality, and of negligence.Do not open as an emergency site if you cannot even stabilize/ do not have the skills to stabilize. Humble yourself and admit it/ retire.Do the bare minimum by giving analgesia! Be brave enough to offer euthanasia to end the sufferingOn top of that- I was charged a consult fee/ xrays that totaled to R1 500.Consult of what? He's stable but needs observation so drive him there watch him die? Perform CPR IN THE CAR AFTER I LEAVE? no spinal or other fractures?Poor quality xrays, poorly written xray report AND missing all the injuries. This was a horrible lesson, but one that taught me to never choose this place again. I didn't want to pay, for what service exactly? Missing everything and doing absolutely nothing for him!I realized after that settling the amount and wiping my hands off them was a healthier approach.

They're my first experience with a vet and man has it been a great experience thus far.All the staff are so friendly and helpful!I still haven't managed get my one rescue to them as she's still very skittish around collars and too much physical contact, but the staff here have been a massive support with their reassurance, encouragement and willingness to help. You can just tell these are all people who genuinely care for animals and prioritise their best interests ❤️
