A beautiful old church

A well looked after old church, still in service today. Well worth a visit.

Great historical building

Great photographic opportunity in town. Historic old building. Well maintained and still in use.

This is steeped in deep and interesting history. From it's edification and the scribe who tried to run off with the funds... to the installment of an antique bell to give the building the feel of museum. It is built out of sandstone and still bears bullet marks from the Anglo Boer War. It has an outside clock that is still rung to call the faithful to worship. Three aisles and two walk downs in each branch of the ship. There is a gallery, but the steps are made of narrow winding cast-iron, painted white. The organ has been newly cleaned and is a joy to play (but needs strong fingers). The simple stained glass windows are not meant to distract one from the basic message of the preacher, 'Prijst Hem... Looft Hem...Ik ben De Weg, De Waarheid en het Leven' are some of the old Dutch words engraved in the white sandstone pulpit's sides. Outside, around the building, there is prepared garden pebble walkway and a framing garden with seats for quiet meditation in the back corners. Off to the right, there is a memorial building containing the remains of the old horse-drawn hearse.(simple restrooms are around the corner here). Approaching the church from the front, there is a brick-sandstone memorial wall that served as fundraising memorabilia when I was a child. As you exit to the right, there are three tar pole crosses with a built stone seat for quiet meditation, or outside services. It serves as remembrance to late Oudominee Esterhuizen who was a missionary to Zimbabwe and left deep and lasting footprints in this community. Footprints of service, guidance and preaching, together with his wife, dearly beloved Martie, who served as organist, sang in the choir and led the women's service according to my memory.
