A local’s view on planning your own trip to the Kruger National Park. I am fortunate to live in Johannesburg South Africa, a mere 4 to 5 hour drive to the KNP. Over the years I have visited many times and during different seasons. The KNP is an absolute unique nature reserve where you can do a self-drive in search of the BIG FIVE and all the other big and small animal species roaming in its bush and on the siennas. It also hosts hundreds of birds waiting to be identified if you are a keen birdwatcher.Do plan a trip if you are longing for an UNCOMPLICATED WAY OF BECOMING ONE WITH THE AFRICAN BUSH AND THE VAST ANIMALS AND BIRD LIFE TO BE FOUND THERE.First thing: Buy a KNP map or find one on the internet to learn all about what this nature reserve has to offer as far as roads, camp sites, accommodations, dining and shopping options, bird hides, animals, birds, trees, where you can get out of your vehicle, picnic spots and where there are toilets and where NOT.The Park offers various types of ACCOMMODATION: from fairly luxurious private camps to more basic self-catering and camping options. Pick your choice and book in advance for this nature reserve is extremely popular with both locals and visitors. Prices are very reasonable. We prefer the self-catering option which allow us to prepare some meals ourselves whilst other meals we can have at the restaurant if the camp where we stay do have a restaurant or take-away service. Do make sure you know what is available to plan accordingly.CATERING: many of the camps have outsourced restaurants that offer good service and meal options. Alternatively there will be a well-stocked shop where you can buy all you need to brew up your own feast!PICNIC: consider packing a picnic basket and plan your trip to find a suitable spot en route where you can get out of your vehicle and prepare your own breakfast, brunch or lunch. about the camps, roads and picnic spots. Some of these picnic spots offer facilities where you can make a fire to BRAAI your meat or prepare your eggs - the true South-African way. The smell of bacon and eggs lingering in the air under the huge indigenous trees, whilst the birds are singing in the branches is a great way of making lasting memories of an African Safari

I stayed with Outlook Safaris!! It was too cold for the pool but I heard it was very nice. My tent did not look like the one that the travel agent showed me on line, but they are super neat, clean, and well equipped with what you need! I love how the tent sits next to the fence...we watched animals walk right by! The staff and food was super amazing!! If you are “young”, you will definitely want to stay with Outlook Safaris

Fair value for money if you are prepared to assist yourself (self-catering) though the attitude of 9 out of 10 of the staff members needs desperate improvement. Customers are treated as being a disruption to their daily almost non-existent service delivery...

Kruger national park is South Africa's largest game reserve having been founded in 1926.It lies between Limpopo in the west and Mpumalanga in the south. It is bordered by Zimbabwe in the north and Mozambique in the east. The park is 19485 Km squared and home to numerous species of animal , bird and insect life. Each year hundreds of thousands of people flock to the park to enjoy the so called big 5 which consists of elephants , leopards, lions , cheetahs and Rhinos. The park has ensured that these animals which were once on the endangered list are now thriving in a protected environment. The accommodation varies from rustic tented camps with communal ablution facilities to luxurious fit for royalty. Whoever you are , the park has something for everyone.

Amazing!!!!!!! I never thought it would be this great... the only problem is that it is so massive which I also didn’t anticipate!!!!! We were there a few days and were unable to cover 1/2 the park!My advice is to go to Madikwe game reserve in the North west province. The animal population is so much more dense in a much smaller park. Way better than “over rated” Kruger National Park!

I've been going to the Kruger Park since I was a baby. Through all my memories with animals, safaris and adventure - the accommodation was never once a problem. The provide you with plenty of self catering options to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Workers come every single morning to drop of clean towels and linen and they empty your trash for you. Couldn't ask for anything better.

Lovely place to get away from the busy city life. Saw the big 5 but you need about 3 days of safari to make sure you see them. It offers braai facilities and there are restaurants around and supermarket if you need anything.
