Witsand Nature Reserve

Please note that this Witsand is in the Northern Cape. There are white sanddunes, and it is known for the roaring sand. Went on a day trip. Interesting Nature Reserve. Shop is disappointing. Take everything you need.

Beautiful, tranquility, calming, no cellphone reception unless if you go up the dunes, so you can unwind.Roads to witsand are all dirt roads so preferably use a higher car or bakkie.Friendly and helpful staff.Chalets are well kept and clean, camping should be available as well.If you want to experience something different in the kalagadi try this.

Beautiful stark surroundings. Patch of white sand dunes in the middle of the Karoo landscape. Great camping facilities. Not a lot of groceries available on site so make sure you stock up a food and drink beforehand.

This is a cute, sweet nature reserve with a couple of different short routes. These are marked on the sign boards at the different entrances to the reserve. Please don't expect Kirstenbosch or anywhere similar. There is no restaurant serving coffee & cakes, none of the plants are identified, there is no office (& no entry fee). It is just the walking routes that zig zag in different directions around the side of the hill where the reserve is located. But having said that, there are wonderful views, amazing bird sightings, the occasional grysbok, & a couple of well placed benches. Coffee and cake are available after your walk, in one of the town's 4 restaurants.

I was a bit disappointed, the reserve is very small, and the winding roads feel like you're taking a stroll in someone's backyard. There's not much birding either since it's between the houses and the busy harbor road in a narrow space, with the odd gull or swallow flying overhead.It is, however, a great spot for some macro-photograhy, and if you want a nice view of the river mouth. The paths are well looked after and there is what seems like a pet cemetery a long the way.
