James Findlay Collectable Books & Antique Maps

James Findlay's store is my favourite Joburg destination, and really one of the most memorable retail experiences in South Africa. Located in the basement of the grand and wonderful Rand Club, it has great atmosphere. James is wonderfully knowledgeable, and even serious collectors will be surprised at his treasures.

James Findlay Collectable Books is a treasure trove of wonder. Entering through the grandiose Rand Club one is transported to another world when stepping into the shop. Various curated spaces housing different book topics and maps means that no matter how often you visit you will find something unique to take home. James himself is a wealth of knowledge and every discussion is value add offered by the shop. 100% visit the shop to have your life (and bookshelves) enriched.

James Findlay's shop is one of the great gems of Johannesburg. Come down for a day and have lunch in Africa's largest bar (open to the public) and you will not regret it. Set amidst the splendour of the Rand Club, the store houses an array of rare - but reasonably priced - collectables, books, maps and curios. One can find used books for 100 rand and even an original Dante Gabriel Rossetti drawing, a Rembrandt etching (redone in the 19th century using original engravings), and gorgeous maps ranging from the 17th century until today. There is a great collection of ANC protest posters - true collectables - and a range of Africana and global maps, posters, books and more. I've purchased many items from James, and I know auctions and rare collections well, and I can assure you of the originality and excellent prices available on all items. A true Johannesburg - and South African - gem.

The James Findlay Antique Maps and Collectable Books Gallery is a town treasure. Situated in the historic Rand Club, in the heart of the Johannesburg CBD, it is worth visiting even if you don't want to buy anything. James has an astonishing collection of books, sketches, posters, maps and other artifacts that will keep you browsing for hours. Adding to the joy of visiting the shop is the ability to chat to James Findlay himself, who is an incredible story teller, and who has vast general knowledge on a wide array of subjects. I love this book shop so much I could live there! The space is often described as a treasure trove, which it is. There is so much to choose from, you definitely need to give yourself enough time to browse. My absolute favourite are the original antique maps, dating back to 1635! I also like that the Instagram page is updated regularly.

The regular in-store book launches and book reviews are always well prepared topics.The bookshop has a fantastic range of literature and an interesting collection of posters of pre 94 history of South Africa. Classic historic maps and sea charts are a treat.Not one's usual book store! Jazz and wine pairing evenings are social events the book shop does present that allows for excellent networking opportunities whilst having a little fun.Chat to James. I have purchased several pieces of original artwork and books from James Findlay. The service was exceptional and professional as were the products on offer. I can highly recommend a visit to his shop situated in the Rand Club.

James is incredibly knowledgeable, not only about books, old maps and collectable curiosities, but has a wealth of knowledge about Joburg and it’s history too. No wonder his delightful bookstore is housed in the magnificent Rand Club, a heritage gem. It was a pleasure doing business with James.
