Put simply, this place ticks all our boxes ✅- Not too far from JHB.- We loved the trail into the camp. The Defender ate it up.- Campsites are great, well positioned and far away from each other.- Facilities (ablutions & washing area) are basic but clean and faultless.- Short walk to a beautiful gorge.- Short drive to 2 beautiful viewpoints.- The staff and Allan were very friendly and helpful.- Pricing is very reasonable. We would recommend a 4x4 or vehicle with high clearance.

This is a lovely breakaway from every day life. The Safari Tents are well equipped. It is clean, neat and well maintained. It is private, so you get a lot of quiet time in the bush. Great 4x4 routes and game viewing. Alan and his team are wonderful and considerate hosts. All in all a great place. Definitely worth the visit.

The Waterberg Wilderness Reserve is beautiful. We stayed in the safari tents. The facilities were clean and well equipped. The owners were friendly and welcoming. They have 4 cute dogs that came to greet us everyday. The kitchen is sufficiently equipped. There is a bathroom inside of the tent and an outdoor shower which is fantastic as long as the weather isn't windy. We went 4x4ing in the Reserve, swam in the clear Surprise Dam and had a picnic by Sundowners view point. We saw plenty of wildlife including a family of giraffes. It is recommended for 4x4 drives. It was an amazing experience and we will definitely be returning.

A winner indeed. Get away from city life and experience the wilderness in 2.5 hours of Gauteng. Whatever your interests, walking, running, off-road driving or just chilling, then look no further.Three accommodation options include 4 tented camps (glamping), well kitted out with good views, (3 can sleep 4, one sleeps only two and more private), 5 private or exclusive campsites with own ablutions, most have at least two sites which can accommodate two parties if you’re a group and then 3 larger 'shared ablution’ campsites which can comfortably accommodate 3 or more sites each. The shared ablutions all with hot showers are in good condition. Pricing varies according to selection. For group camping I suggest the Shared ablutions campsites as the private campsites are more than a walk away. (Google maps Satellite will give some perspective). The Bushveld is pristine; 2 large gorges make for interesting exploration or a swim in many of the pools. The one gorge is accessible from the main reception area via Leopard trail, which is well marked, the other needs local directions. Various birds, trees and wild flowers add to the interest. For the more adventurous Alan, the owner, will drop you off and you can walk up the gorge back to main camp. Alternatively drive the many trails which are well marked on the map you receive on arrival. Keep an eye out for many of the game which roam the reserve. Go to Sundowner view point which overlooks the Waterberg for magnificent sunsets, and, time permitting, return via the trail called Van Zyl's Pass (need I say more) or return at a leisurely pace past Fish Eagle dam back to camp before dark. Many of the roads require 4x4 which are clearly marked. Others can be done in high clearance 2x4. The terrain has many loose stones which, at times, require a steady foot on the accelerator. Fortunately they are of the rounded type so a cut sidewall is unlikely. We found Alan most helpful and accommodating in arrival and departure times and he is very enthusiastic to share this beautiful area with anyone like-minded about enjoying and exploring this wilderness area. Highly recommended !

What a gem of a spot!!! Campsite set up with so much thought. From a great shower, covered area to prep, to 2 ply toilet paper!! They’ve really thought of everything. We also took a look at the tented camps which look awesome and are a far more hassle free option. We will definitely be back!!

Serene wilderness camp with beautiful views and an excellent place to unwind and enjoy peace and quiet. Nicely appointed luxury tents with private bathroom and kitchenette. Loved the outdoor shower.

My wife and I spent a night away camping in the Waterberg Wilderness Reserve. I couldn't recommend it more highly. Each campsite is private with its own ablutions and outdoor kitchen. We stayed at Woodpecker camp and it had a fantastic view of the Waterberg Mountains. It's a 3-hour drive with the last 30 minutes on a jeep track up into the mountains.Excellent hiking and swimming opportunities in the gorge.Allan and his family were fantastic hosts and provided us with lots of useful advice.Maybe the best camping spot I've found weekendable from Joburg.
