De Kelder Restaurant Port Elizabeth
Sadly not what it used to be. We used to go here for Old Years Eve often, and there used to be a lovely, fun vibe (one year they had and handed out glowsticks, for instance), with amazing food. This year (since they moved) it was not a good experience at all. We felt rushed, the service was sub-par, and my food was not up to their old standard. Their vegetables used to be amazing, I ordered a side of veg - but it was the same as spar packet mix, and undercooked with no flavour. The roast potatoes were also undercooked, and due to them wanting to close (it was about 9:00/9:15), they replaced them with chips as it would take to long for new potatoes. Deserts were not on the menu, and none of the items mentioned sounded appealing, or special.Sadly we will not be returning. The Coachman or Ginger is a lot better, and the prices are pretty much the same. Pity, as this was kind of an old PE icon.Good: Apparently the fillet was cooked perfectly and was very nice, I didn't have that. My lamb shank was cooked nicely and was a good size.

From the moment you enter you can tell there’s a lot of history behind this restaurant. Went as a large group which wasn’t the best idea as its ideally meant for couples. Food understandably took ages to come - bless the server who was an absolute angel and did her best.Food was good. Id actually rather eat at Ginger up the road for these prices.Ordered the steak with prawns, chicken salad and a virgin mojito which wasn’t on the drinks menu but the server was kind enough to make it for me.

Absolutely excellent. The service is supreme. I was thoughorly impressed my my bone marrow steak. The carpaccio was amazing, the crocodile, springbok and warthog. The atmosphere is light and modern. In and outdoor seating is available. I would fully recommend this restaurant no matter what you feel in the mood to eat. Top notch. Love it and will regularly go back.

Very disappointing when we were expecting to impress our overseas guests. No bread offered, yet all the tables around us were given bread. Ordered 2 bottles of wine, only one was brought....waited 15 mins for second bottle and after 3 requests, finally got ice buckets. Food took close to 2 hours. One person sat and watched us eat for 10 mins before getting his kudu steak. He ordered it medium, it arrived blue. Sent it back, after 15 mins, it arrived....this time...medium rare!! Nobody came to apologise. Earlier the owner came past and said she knew we had been waiting really long and chef will be fired if food didnt hurry up. She never came back to check on us again. Everyone I tried to complain to, did nothing about it. The rest of our food was good, but I can't say I've had worse service... We were really not expecting this and oir visitors were quite horrified, to be honest. Everybody makes mistakes, but at least apologise and try and make it up to the customer....

What a pleasent dining experience. I met the owner Michelle at the entrance and from the get go I felt welcome and at home. There is a warm charm about the place and although there was renovations inprocess, the homely warm feeling was not impaired. I had a few starters as I wanted to experience variety. It was great food all around. Topped with warm and friendly service it turned out to be one of my better solo dining experiences.

Beautiful restaurant directly at the beach. The food was exceptionally tasty. I ate a filet steak with garlic butter which was very good. As a dessert the cheesecake was 5/5. The service was very kind and always available when we needed it. We furthermore had a nice talk with the waiter. The prices are in line with the quality offered.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Visited the new De Kelder location in Brooke’s pavilion. 1hr20 for our food on a not too particularly busy night. 2 steaks cold and 1 steak overdone. All the chips are clearly frozen, ready made chips - chewy and dusty. All veg was cold and not particularly flavoured and very hard in the centre, not cooked through. Chicken had zero flavour and dry as a bone. Diner said that Steers was better! In the end, the response from management was very insipid and poor. While they comped the chicken and redid 2 steaks, they were happy to charge their exorbitant prices for the meal, despite saying the service and food was not up to their standard. Manager avoided us when we left, not even apologising. The simple fact of the matter is that this restaurant cannot create good food any longer. The choice of ingredients and service cannot be fixed easily, and I will be surprised it is still open in a year.Sad to see an institution like De Kelder fall so badly.
