Vrederus Wild Trout
Very nice, cosy, well furnished cottages with lots of unique touches. Streams full of wild trout. Very nice views. Working farm, lots for the kids to see and enjoy. Naudè’s Nek Pass is recommended. The road is unfortunately in very poor condition, nearest shops ~ an hour away.

Vrederus is where some of the really big wild trout are caught in South Africa. Still water and stream fishing is available. You will need a float tube or use the boat at Vrederus. Situated just over the top of Naude's neck pass between Rhodes and Maclear with some of the most beautiful views and landscapes the country has to offer. My wife and I have stayed there a few times and although it can get very cold in winter the cottages have fireplaces and plenty of wood to keep you warm. The cottages are very well furnished and very comfortable. The hosts Danny and Juan-Marie are very accommodating, friendly and helpful people.

What a wonderful find. We travel in a camper, just drove in and asked if we can park/camp for the night on their farm. We parked nearby their beautiful and comfortable cottages overlooking the trout dam and farm. Our planned one night stay turned into 8 nights! It is peaceful, has endless terrain to explore, surprisingly affordable and Jean-Marie and Donie are terrific hosts. It's well worth extending your travels with at least a day to visit Vrederus.

We stayed in Boathouse for 2 nights. Wonderful cosy house with amazing atmosphere and views for days! Lovely hosts that made us feel very welcome. Will definitely recommend booking here if travelling to Rhodes via Naudesnek pass.

Beautiful setting, quiet and nature rules. This is a working farm and offers great scenes for photographers. I had no luck with trout, but local family has bagged large trout in the dam casting from the boat to the side.

My wife and myself have stayed at Vrederus many times over the past ten years, and have always had a wonderful time, both for our biodiversity research and for holidays. The accommodation offers everything you need for a comfortable getaway. The area around the cottages is beautiful and good for bird watching and enjoying sundowners. Additionally, a trip up Naudesnek pass is extremely rewarding, either by car or mountain bike. It offers spectacular views over the Drakensberg and boasts a wealth of wildflowers, including many rare and unusual species. The hosts are very friendly, helpful, and make you feel comfortable.
