About the Business

Matjiesfontein - South Africa | "It is curious, and to me very attractive this mixture of civilization & the most wild untamed freedom; the barren mountains & wild Karoo & the railway train."- Olive Schreiner, March 25th, 1890. Take a trip on the Old London Bus, let yourself be summoned to dinner by trumpet, soak up the history in the Transport or Victorian museums, take in the uniqueness of the Karoo with veld walks, hikes and mountain bikes, visit the Boer War British Army remount encampment site (c.1900) nearby, play a game of tennis, or simply relax, and read in of the hotel's opulent lounges or by the residents only pool.

Very friendly and accommodating as we traveled in our campervan with our furbaby but stopped for a overnight birthday treat. Pub lunches are good and dinner well prepared .Red bus tour interesting and entertaining.

What incredibly friendly and helpful staff. We stopped to check our car making a terrible noise , and before we knew it Michael was under the vehicle and then finding the part and a tow truck followed. The best place to break down- we had lunch in the pub and by the time we left we knew most of the staff. Thank you Cindy and Jasmine - they know everyone. Living in a small town showed me what community is all about. Thanks “Matjies”.

Enjoyed a coffee and scones on an icy windy morning passing through en route to Cape Town. This Hotel is worth a visit- it is a well preserved piece of history and you feel like you are transported into a living museum. Friendly service from all staff.Definitely worth the stop if you are travelling past!

Great place to stay if you want the experience of the turn of the century. The staff are just fantastic. I had a puncture on my 4x4 and a very kind staff member Gery, (not sure of the spelling) helped me to change the wheel. The whole experience was fantastic

It's one of those little places you just have to see, which has so much history. From an experience sleeping in the hotel to great food and excellent service. Every person working there makes you feel at home. When there, make sure you get hold of Johny for a tour and entertainment in the pub next door. We'll definitely go back again, love the place.

Really enjoyed our stay here. A trip back in time. The museums were fascinating. We only stayed 1 night that felt like enough. The pool was way out the back, we nearly didn’t find it. But v refreshing.

Matjiesfontein! This charming South African town is home to some of the most intriguing exhibits and collections I have ever come across. From the Transport Museum that showcases vintage modes of transportation, including horse-drawn carriages, bicycles and old steam trains to the Open Air Museum, which offers an immersive experience into the life of early settlers through original village buildings such as a schoolhouse and church. However, my personal favorite is the Lord Milner Hotel Museum where I can take a step back in timeThe Lord Milner in Matjiesfontein boasts a lavish and opulent interior that immediately transports visitors to a bygone era. The historic town's remote and pristine location is the perfect spot for conducting scientific research, especially when it comes to mapping the stars. What makes this collaboration even more exciting is that Matjiesfontein has a history of embracing science and innovation. The town was once home to Lord Milner, who built a private observatory in 1899 where he conducted groundbreaking astronomical research.
