Beautiful setting. Never got as far as the garden as entry was R200 per person. Not in my budget as there were three of us. I can understand why but a niche outing for the diehard garden enthusiast.

What an absolute pleasure to be able to walk on a private tour with the owners. This beautiful, Cape Dutch architecture, home was an absolute dream. The history behind it, the stories but most importantly the beautiful family. We had the great honor to not only walk the gardens but to see the interiors. The gardens are inspired by gardens around the world and from Sandy's heart. Highly recommend to book a tour.

Such a beautiful garden. Had a wonderful few hours here at the open day in aid of St Joseph's who do such good work. The lawns were immaculate and the hedging perfectly manicured. Gardens towered over by the stately Stellenberg Manor House. Do try to visit. I highly recommend you do

This was a delightful surprise to find in the heart of the Southern Suburbs. It was late in April, on a perfect Autumn day when we decided to take a friend's mom from Canada there. We couldn't book by phone as we had to email a booking request to them. Without knowing this in advance, we tried calling repeatedly until someone answered, explained the booking system and then told us to email. By Friday morning we hadn't had an answer so we drove there. This is a large estate that originally belonged to Simon van der Stel, and requires a staff of 5 to maintain the gardens. Aron greeted us at the private nursery gates and welcomed us in. It's just as well no-one had contacted us because the price of R200 per person is quite steep for locals. We were there already so we paid. Armed with an information sheet which had a map on the other side we entered the gardens on the right of the house. The estate is in pristine condition, despite them losing several mature trees in a severe winter storm two years ago. The loss could also possibly be ascribed to the intense drought we were having at the time. Most of the gardens are formally laid out in 'rooms', with the outskirts of some of the property being allowed to grow a little wildly. Each room is an absolute delight and no two match each other. And each has been given careful consideration in layout, views both into and out, and plant selection. The house, despite being built in the 1700s, is beautifully kept and it is clearly well-maintained. Streams run through the property with lovely water features towards the bottom of the estate. The view of Table Mountain was breathtakingly beautiful. We were allowed to peak into the main house as someone was cleaning the entrance hall. Stellenberg is privately owned by the Ovenstones who were away at the time, but the house is not for public view. I would simply love to explore the house, it is exquisite, judging from the little peak I got. The Ovenstones have improved the garden over the years with the latest improvement being the tennis court area which is now boxed gardens filled with wild flowers. The contrast between wild and formal is interesting. Francesca Watson built that particular garden, as well as the bottom area which is lined with poplars. The house was probably built in the late 1600s or early 1700s and the present U-shape is attributed to Louis Thibault. Other than some decorative work added by Anton Anreith, the house remains in its original state. The current owners have owners have had the property for nearly 60 years. The estate once encompassed much of what is now Kenilworth and Claremont, with an early divided piece of land being sold to Ralph Arderne in 1845. Arderne Gardens, which is another exquisite garden in the area, is all that remains of that estate as the original house he built was demolished.
