This is a great bookstore! From Holland I was looking for a childhood favorite and the team of Chapter 1 went out of their way to help me. E-mail requests were dealt with rapidly and delivery from South Africa took less then some national deliveries. Keep up the good work!

I bought the Dossier Ascension book, it is in pristine condition. I am truly impressed with the quality of this second hand book.The service was also friendly, prompt and professional. The only negative is that delivery was a bit pricey at R100 for shipping of a book within JHB.

Great collection kept up to date, with fair prices. Wide variety and helpful staff. Chapter 1 has a broader collection offsite for rare books. The online catalogue seems to be kept up to date which is great. A true gem.

An interesting place to browse with considerable “average’ stock on site that most normal people will enjoy To get the best experience, especially if there are a few specific things you have in mind, go online, see what you want, phone ahead and ask them to set aside in advance. They have 3 warehouses containing a ‘goldmine’ of great books lurking around. Email is not best as the info@chapter1 isn’t in use.

Very cramped, and noisy and service was slow. The place needs to be cleaned up and room made for customers to move. Ventilation almost non-existent. Assistants also need to be more attentibe to clients, and socialise less. There is a storehouse nearby where many books are kept. Had to wait 30 mins to get *some* of the books I wanted. (Sorry I'm being a grumpy old man here, but I really feel this place could be better.)

I have been going to this bookshop since the days they were in Melville. Today, the person at the front desk made a clumsy and obvious attempt to rip me off an additional R45 on my bill. I had previously calculated the amount I would have to pay and when they showed me a more pricey amount on the calculator I said that that didn't sound right. The cashier immediately stated the correct amount without needing to recalculate. How could they know the correct amount and then still show me an additional amount on the calculator? Be sure to do your own calculation if you go there.
